- 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jew=
s.
- 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which =
in
Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered
colonnades.

|
- 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the
lame, the paralyzed (-and they waited for the moving of the waters.<=
/li>
- 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up
the waters. The first one i=
nto
the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever dise=
ase
he had.)
- **Note: The final phrase of verse 3 and all of verse 4 are not found=
in
many of the original manuscripts, possibly added by later writers to
explain verse 7.

- 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years=
.
- 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this
condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get
well?"
|
|
7
|
- 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to
help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to
get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
- 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and
walk."
|
|

|
- 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> The day on which this took place=
was a
Sabbath,
- 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is =
the
Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
|
|
9
|
- 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick =
up
your mat and walk.'"
- 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick =
it
up and walk?"
- 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slip=
ped
away into the crowd that was there.
|
|

|
- 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, y=
ou
are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.&q=
uot;
- 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had
made him well.

|
- 1. Jesus travels from Galilee back to Judea .
- 2. Note: Jesus’ reason for going to Jerusalem was a feast .
- 3. Near the Sheep Gate is found a pool, another encounter with wat=
er .
|
|
13
|
- 4. What made this pool significant was the number of disabled peop=
le
that gathered around it in hope .
- 5. The Pool of Bethesda was symbolic of
hope and despair .
- 6. While we do not know how old this particular man was we do know h=
ow
long had been an invalid, 38 years.
|
|
14
|
- 7. Jesus asks him the obvious question to test his hope .
- 8. The invalid’s reply shows that he has
limited God’s healing to the
assistance he can receive from men.
- 9. Jesus does not ask him what he believes or in whom he believ=
es.
|
|
15
|
- 10. Jesus merely speaks and the man is cured .
- 11. As instantaneously as he was cured, so the man immediately obey=
ed=09
Jesus’ commands to get up, pick up his mat, and walk.
- 12. Notice the conflict between the
Jews interpretation of the
law and Jesus’ practice.
|
|
16
|
- 13. The Jews demanded to know who gave the former invalid the command to carry his mat, sho=
wing
no interest in who
healed him.
- 14. The former invalid had no idea that it
was Jesus who had healed him.
- 15. It was never Jesus’ intention to draw attention to himself through the miracle=
s .
|
|
17
|
- 16. When Jesus later reveals himself to the man He tells him to stop=
sinning=09
or something worse may happen to him.
- 17. Do you think that man understood Jesus?
- 18. What does his reaction to Jesus command about sinning tell us ab=
out
the man’s understanding?
