- So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews
persecuted him.
- Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this ve=
ry
day, and I, too, am working." For this reason the Jews tried all
the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he=
was
even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

- 1. This was a confrontation between
Jesus and the Jews .
- 2. Further, this was a confrontation between Jewish legalism and
the
practices of Jesus.
- 3. The Jews based their understanding of the sabbath on the Ten Commandments .

- 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six
days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh d=
ay
is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work,
neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or
maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11&n=
bsp;For
in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all
that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord
blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

- 12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord
your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do =

- 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your
God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched =
arm.
Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath
day.

- 4. A careful review shows that God commanded the Jews to their wor=
k in
six days and to observe the seventh day as holy .
- 5. To make a day holy means that you dedicate the entire day to
the
Lord .
- 6. God never rested from His mission of love , and neither did
Jesus.

- 7. Jesus testifies that He was the
Son .
- 8. This angered the Jews because it made Jesus equal to God.
- 9. This further empowers Jesus to
determine and demonstrate
the perfect practice of God’s law.
