- 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of
Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of
people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had
performed on the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside a=
nd
sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was ne=
ar.

- 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he s=
aid
to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?&q=
uot;
6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind wh=
at
he was going to do.
- 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough
bread for each one to have a bite!"

- 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,=
9 "Here
is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how f=
ar
will they go among so many?"

|
- 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plent=
y of
grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of th=
em.
- 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those=
who
were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.=

- 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples,
"Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.&q=

13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pie=
ces
of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

- 14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they beg=
an
to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the
world."
- 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by fo=
rce,
withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

- 1. Jesus has now returned to Galilee from Jerusalem for the third time.
- 2. A great crowd followed Him because of the miracles He performed,
specifically healing the sick.
- 3. On the northeast side of the sea, Jesus went up to a high place that overlooked the Sea =
of
Galilee.
|
|

|
- 4. Here He sat with His disciples , probably teaching them.
- 5. A large crowd of over 5,000 came seeking Him.
- 6. Before speaking, Jesus already knew what He was going to do for
these people.
|
|
11
|
- 7. Jesus did not ask Philip for advice
but He wanted to test=09
him.
- 8. Philip looked at the situation with human
eyes , only seeing limited
resources .
- 9. Andrew looked at the limited resources, expressed his limited
understanding tempered by unlimited
hope .

|
- 10. Barley loaves were the coarse bread of the common people.
- 11. The fish were likely the size of
sardines .
- 12. Jesus instructs the disciples to direct the peopl=
e to sit .
- 13. Jesus then did three things.
|
|
13
|
- 14. Jesus takes the loav=
es and
fish, instead of rejecting them as
inadequate .
- 15. Jesus gave thanks for the food.
- 16. Jesus distributes th=
e food
to
everyone .
|
|
14
|
- 17. Everyone got as much as they
wanted .
- 18. Jesus instructed the disciples to
gather the leftovers and let
nothing be wasted .
- 19. The leftovers were fi=
ve=09
baskets
of bread .
|
|
15
|
- 20. What do you think they did with these leftovers?
- 21. This miracle caused the people of the crowd to want to make Jesus
their
earthly king .=
- 22. So Jesus withdrew from them.
